Queen Mary University

About Bethnal Green

Bethnal Green actually began as a village green back in the day. A small settlement on the outskirts of the main city that appeared in Stepney, East London. After steady growth thanks to its proximity to the city, the area grew into a town in its own right and then became part of Greater London.


Bethnal Green is in the heart of London’s East End, with the cultural diversity and creativity that comes with it.


It’s also known for having many conservation areas, Mile End Park and Victoria Park even though the two parks aren’t technically part of Bethnal Green.


While Bethnal Green is home to Queen Mary University of London, its proximity to the city and Tube station makes it ideal for getting to the many other universities in the city.


Despite its humble beginnings, Bethnal Green has come a long way. While some say the area has been gentrified, but we don’t think so. There are students everywhere and the streets are full of variety, colour, culture, music and life. What’s not to love?

Transport in Bethnal Green

Transport in Bethnal Green is plentiful and easy to use.


Bethnal Green Tube station is at the western edge and sits on the Central line that goes directly into the city.


There are also two railway stations, Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath, both of which go into the city and out into Essex and further afield, if you’re keen to get exploring.


There are also multiple bus routes going into the city and around the area. Some are daytime only while a few night buses also run.


The A11, Mile End Road, runs along the southern edge of Bethnal Green and heads to the A12 to the east and into Whitechapel to the west.

Attractions in Bethnal Green

Bethnal Green has a lot going on even though it’s mainly a working area. Like many areas of London, some highlights cross over while others are actually in other districts but are linked to a different area.


Mile End Park and Victoria Park are linked to Bethnal Green but aren’t actually part of it.


The proximity of Bethnal Green to Whitechapel, Mile End, Cambridge Heath and Hackney means each area shares each other’s amenities.
