About the city of London

London is the ancient capital of the United Kingdom. With history going back several thousand years, the city has been populated since before the Roman invasion.

The area around the River Thames formed the earliest settlement, which was adopted and expanded by the Romans. It’s been a centre for trade and culture since that time, and is now a diverse, welcoming city that caters for every conceivable taste.

London is home to Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, 10 Downing Street, London Bridge, the Tower of London, the London Eye, Westminster, Royal Courts of Justice, Hyde Park, Regent's Park, St James's Park and so much more.

Despite its size and scale, London is easy to navigate, friendly and welcoming to visitors. Just some of the reasons it’s so popular!

Transport in London

As you’d expect from a capital city, London has plenty of transport links. Our London Bridge student accommodation is just minutes from Waterloo and Southwark tube stations.

Arrive by air and you could land at Heathrow, Gatwick, City Airport, Southend Airport, Luton Airport or Stansted Airport. All are just a short train or bus ride away.

London has numerous train stations including Waterloo, King’s Cross St Pancras, St Pancras International (Eurostar), Liverpool Street, Paddington, Euston and many smaller stations.

The London Underground (tube) was the first of its kind and is one of the largest in the world. It has multiple lines with hundreds of stations, some of which run 24/7.

We don’t recommend bringing a car with you when studying in London, but London Bridge is easy to access via the M25, M1, M11, A12, M2, M3 and M4. It’s also close to the South Circular.

It’s a great place to call home and is close to Royal Festival Hall, Shakespeare's Globe, London Eye, St Thomas' Hospital, The Shard, the Fashion and Textile Museum, Imperial War Museum, Elephant & Castle and SEA LIFE Centre London Aquarium.
