About the city of London

London is the largest city in the United Kingdom and the country’s capital. It’s home to around 9 million people, a few hundred thousand of which are students.

The city is a heady mix of cultures, languages, cuisines and lifestyles, with every global community represented here.

London is home to four World Heritage Sites, the Tower of London; Kew Gardens, the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

London has been inhabited since the Bronze Age but was turned into a town by the Romans. Called Londinium, the city has been inhabited constantly since those earliest times.

This history lends a rich character to the people and the city itself that makes it a fascinating place to visit and to be a student in.

Sanctuary Students has great value cheap student accommodation across London, close to many of the universities and colleges in the city.

London is served by 6 international airports with flights covering the entire globe. Those airports include Heathrow, Gatwick, City Airport, Southend Airport, Luton Airport and Stansted Airport. Each is linked to the city by road, coach and rail links.

London is also well connected by rail and has some of the world’s most famous railway stations. Those stations include Waterloo, Paddington, Euston, King’s Cross St Pancras, Liverpool Street and Clapham Junction.

Each station serves a different region of the country and provides local and intercity rail services.

The London Underground, or Tube, offers subway links across the city. There are numerous lines covering inner and outer London, many of which run 24/7.

London is surrounded by the M25 motorway which links the city with other motorways and smaller roads. Those motorway links include the M1, M11, A12, M2, M3, M4 and thousands of smaller roads.

Buses in London are plentiful and will often run 24/7. Local buses are run by Transport for London while coaches run across the country from various stations within the city.
