About the University of Westminster

The University of Westminster was opened in 1838 as the Royal Polytechnic Institution. It was the first polytechnic in London and was based on Regent Street in central London.

The modern university now has four campuses, The Regent Campus, The Marylebone Campus, The Cavendish Campus and The Harrow Campus.

With around 20,000 undergraduates and just under 5,000 postgraduates, it’s a fairly large university and you’ll be in great company!

The University of Westminster has three colleges and 12 schools including 65 different departments. The main colleges are the College of Design, Creative and Digital Industries, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Westminster Business School.

Each is highly regarded for the quality of its teaching and tends to rank well in those all-important league tables for select courses.

Student life in Westminster

Student life in Westminster can be interesting and fun. There’s a lot going on and plenty to see and do. It’s the heart of government, so during the week it’s a bustling borough full of life. It does quieten down a lot on the weekend, though.

As the University of Westminster has almost 25,000 students and the Chelsea College of Arts is close by, there are plenty of students around and businesses that cater to students.

There’s plenty of shopping around as well as pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants and nightlife. It’s a short distance to Vauxhall, Soho and the West End, so you’re never going to be short of things to do.

Westminster also has lots of galleries, venues and other entertainment options, although some of these can be expensive. There are plenty of parks and open spaces and the river close by so you won’t always be spending money.

Overall, living in Westminster sounds more expensive than it is, as long as you secure well-priced student accommodation.

Transport in Westminster

Westminster is in central London and is very easy to navigate by bus, foot, bike or Tube. Driving can be a challenge (and expensive, if it’s petrol or diesel), so we wouldn’t recommend bringing a car.

St. James's Park station is the only railway station in Westminster but Victoria station is just west of Victoria. The stations handle rail links across the south and southwest and have a Tube station.

St. James’s station and Pimlico are the closest Tube stops with Westminster Tube by the palace on the eastern edge.

Victoria also has the national coach station, ideal for National Express and coaches from other carriers.

Transport for London runs buses throughout Westminster. A good portion of routes are 24/7 while others are daytime only.

Our Westminster accommodation for students is in close proximity to Tube and bus stops so you’re never far from where you need to be.
