Universities in and around Truro
Truro is a small city, the only city in Cornwall, with a population of around 22,000 people.
It’s an old city, having been populated since time immemorial. It wasn’t until a Norman castle was constructed in the 12th century that Truro came to prominence. It was then that local administration was brought to the town and it grew steadily from there.
Aside from Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro also has Truro Penwith College and Cornwall College.
The closest universities are Falmouth University to the southwest and The University of Plymouth to the northeast. Both have links to the Royal Cornwall Hospital site and send medical students there each year.
Truro transport
Truro is a city of a modest size but it has access to decent transport links. Our Truro student accommodation is very easy to get to, whether you arrive by car or train.
The closest airport is Newquay Airport, 12 miles north. Newquay handles local flights and flights to British cities and some international destinations. It’s also the site for the upcoming Spaceport Cornwall, with the first flights planned for late 2022.
Truro railway station is on the Cornish main line and has a direct service to London Paddington as well as local services throughout Devon and Cornwall.
Truro is close to the A30, A390, A38 and minor roads throughout the county.
The town also has a ferry link to Falmouth that runs four times per day.
Student life in Truro
Truro is a laid-back city that epitomises the Cornish way of life. While a productive city, it has less urgency and more friendliness than many cities. It doesn’t have the same number of amenities, though.
The Treliske Hospital site is a short drive or bus ride west of the city centre on the A390. It’s a convenient position that’s on the hospital site but also not too far away from the city.
Highlights of Truro include Truro Cathedral, Royal Cornwall Museum, Trelissick, Victoria Gardens, Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Poppy Cottage Garden, Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, King Harry Ferry, Lemon Street Market, Skinner’s Brewery, Tregothnan, St Agnes Heritage Coast, Hall for Cornwall, Boscawen Park, Perranporth Beach and the city centre.
